Hot Topics - The View from the Bridge: HR Leaders Tell it Like it Is (and Will Be!)
Trends in workforce management come and go, but senior-level HR executives are expected to be conversant in both the traditional and cutting edge strategies. Our four panelists represent an array of industries and sectors; they lead HR efforts in enterprises from small start-ups to large, major corporations. But all of them face the challenge of defining their roles in the face of pressures, unanticipated issues and hard choices:
- What is the right balance for positioning HR between core people skills and "evidence-based HR"?
- With limited resources, what skill sets do we need on our teams today and for tomorrow? How do we attract those individuals to our organizations?
- How do we utilize and address statistical analysis, digital communication, visual thinking, numerical reasoning, organizational design, robotics implications, employee experience design and talent attraction, development and retention?
- How are we/will we deal with contingent workers? How do we need to change how we assess performance, develop and speed up team building with this constituency? How do we stay focused in the face of unexpected turmoil?
Donna Bonaparte, Vice President Human Resources/Chief Human Resources Officer, Babson College
Donna Bonaparte is the Vice President of Human Resources/Chief Human Resources Officer at Babson College. In her role she is responsible for defining and leading strategic workforce programs. She is charged with partnering with leadership to create and implement programs aligned with the organization’s strategic roadmap and infusing the principles of Entrepreneurial Thought and Action. She develops and directs activities designed to meet the organizational needs of the college constituency including talent acquisition, comprehensive total rewards and recognition strategy, training and development, benefits administration, workforce diversity and other activities.
Prior to joining Babson College Donna was the Senior Director of Human Resources and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Cambridge Health Alliance, an award winning integrated healthcare system comprised of three hospitals and more than twenty primary care sites in Cambridge, Somerville and the Metro North region. In this role Donna was responsible for the direction of talent acquisition, total rewards, compensation, benefits administration, workforce development, diversity, and the creation of an internal temporary staffing agency.
During the past twenty five years as a senior HR Leader, she has gained expertise in all aspects of workforce management. She was featured in the Boston Sunday Globe Career Section in the article “WORKING FOR THE FUTURE: Education and Specialized Knowledge.” As a recognized HR and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion leader, Donna has been a presenter at many conferences including: 2018 Color Magazine’s Women’s Leadership Conference in New York, and 2017 in Massachusetts; Keynote speaker at the EC University Women’s Leadership Conference in 2018, speaker at the “LEAP HR” in Higher Education conference, 2018 and was featured as one of the “Three Top National Diversity Executives” in Profiles in Diversity Magazine. As a healthcare HR leader Donna received the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Association Outstanding Chapter Achievement Award. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Club, Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and a former member of the Board of Directors of HRLF.
Prior to joining Cambridge Health Alliance, Donna held senior HR and operational positions in the public and private sector.
Kathy Blake McCann, Ph.D. Chief Human Resources Officer, Commonwealth Care Alliance
As Chief Human Resources Officer, Kathy is responsible for developing and executing the strategic people strategy in support of the long term business plan and strategic goals and objectives of the organization. This includes talent management, performance management, succession planning, organizational development, learning, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, facilities management, occupational health, and wellness. She participates in setting the organizational direction for CCA, sits on several executive committees, and collaborates and advises the Board of Directors on all human capital initiatives and expenditures.
Kathy has more than 20 years of experience in risk management, organizational consulting, and human resources at the Liberty Mutual Group, including establishing and leading HR for a rapidly growing multinational business spanning Asia, South America, and Eastern and Western Europe. In addition she serves on two boards: Senior Human Resources Network (SHRN) and Mayflower Portuguese Water Dog Club.
Kathy holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a concentration in organizational and behavioral psychology.
Brendan Reidy, Chief Human Resources Officer, Acushnet Company
Brendan joined the Acushnet Company in January 2019 as the company’s Chief Human Resources Officer. Prior to joining the Company, he was Vice President HR - Organizational Effectiveness at Biogen where he had responsibility for talent management, global learning, culture initiatives and people analytics. In his 7 years at Biogen, he also led HR for the global R&D organization and Global Commercial Operations. In those roles, he led global initiatives to improve leadership succession, build capability, and improve employee engagement in support of the company’s growth. Prior to Biogen, he worked at P&G and Gillette for 9 years and held a number of positions in HR including the Country HR Manager for Costa Rica and as a leader of key integration projects for the integration of P&G and Gillette. Brendan holds a B.A. in English from Stonehill College.
Marc Reuss, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Excelitas Technologies
Marc Reuss is Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for Excelitas Technologies Corp.
Mr. Reuss is responsible for developing the company’s global human resources strategy and leading core initiatives that attract, engage, retain and develop a strong global team to support Excelitas’ future growth.
Prior to joining Excelitas, Mr. Reuss served as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at ConvaTec Group, PLC, in London. Previously, he spent eight years with Novartis as the head of human resources for their Vaccines and Diagnostics division, and then as the head of HR for Sandoz, their large generics business based in Munich, Germany. Prior to that, he spent eight years with Boston Scientific serving in senior international HR roles after beginning his career at a number of leading aerospace, financial services, and high technology companies.
Mr. Reuss holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Potsdam College in New York and a Master’s degree in Human Resources from Emmanuel College in Boston.
