Visual Thinking and Innovation

Could your work teams use better communication skills, enhanced critical thinking abilities and improved collaboration? Want more innovation and better group dynamics in your organization? An exciting new approach to developing these capabilities lies in VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) and HRLF's December program will introduce you to this construct.  Please join us on December 6th at Bentley University for Visual Thinking Strategies and Innovation when Dabney Hailey will take us through the theory behind VTS and lead us all in an experiential opportunity to try it out. This session promises to be both informative and unusual: we will be using museum-quality artwork as a neutral point of reference that morning to explore this tool in facilitated, evidence-based, open-ended discussions!

A consultant and museum curator, Dabney Hailey will share her expertise to introduce us to VTS and its development as a methodology rooted in research from cognitive psychology and art education and now applied in education, healthcare, and business. Hailey will also steward us through an actual art discussion, using that shared experience to tease out the ways the VTS structure creates psychological safety, raises multiple perspectives, ensures attentive listening, and prevents premature judgment. We will gain awareness of our own shifting ideas and perceptions as we look and reflect deeply together. 

Hailey will offer several case studies on how this methodology has impacted doctors and business people, then we’ll break into groups to practice one or two of this complex method’s core techniques. Take away some shared language, a new model for how innovation can happen at the level of group discussion, and a deep experience with art!

Dabney Hailey, Founder and Principal, Hailey Consulting Group, LLC.

Dabney Hailey, Founder + Principal of Cambridge-based Hailey Consulting Group, is an expert Visual Thinking Strategies practitioner and trainer and a pioneer in developing the method as a managerial and innovation tool. Since 2001, she has led VTS discussions and trained facilitators in a range of contexts (businesses, museums, universities, and the medical world). She and her team design art experiences that build clients’ skills and mindsets as leaders, team communicators, visual thinkers, and problem-finders, integrating arts learning within leadership development, design thinking, agile, LeanKit, UX, and more. She has designed workshops for Harvard Business School’s Executive Education program and Stanford’s d.school, and her clients range from Fortune 500 companies in financial services, IT, and retail to design consultancies and universities. Hailey, who held lead curatorial positions at Wellesley College’s Davis Museum and Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum for more than a decade prior to founding Hailey Group, is also an established curator and arts educator specializing in modern and contemporary art. She is dedicated to advancing the crucial, positive impact art can have across domains in contemporary society, one rich, stimulating conversation at a time!
