PART I - THE PROGRAM
Silence is a Statement: Understanding Race in the Workplace
As you know there are many complicated reasons why we, as a nation and as individuals, often avoid discussing race at work. Whereas there may be particular situations where this approach is appropriate, the collective impact is that we cannot solve for what we can’t talk about. As a result, significant disparities in hiring, development, promotion and salary continue to exist along racial lines. Current events are demonstrating a strong need to finally address this topic openly and help move us forward as a nation.
This session addresses race from two angles:
1) What insight does an individual need to understand the issues related to race?
2) What can each of us do to improve relationships at work?
Using a series of experiential and interactive approaches, participants will leave the session having had a personally moving and professionally empowering experience.
PART II - THE WORKSHOP
Beyond Unconscious Bias: Shifting Behavior from Intention to Impact
This workshop will immediately follow the May Program at 11:30 am - 2:00pm and includes lunch. Space is limited and registration is $49 for members and $99 for non-members.
We have become comfortable accepting that workplace bias is unconscious and unintentional. Yes, and it continues to be a barrier to our business results. So, what do we do now? Research shows that individual and organizational behavior shifts by:
a. focusing on the related dynamics that perpetuate the disparities that exist in hiring, promotion and overall interactions
b. measuring the behavior change we want to see
c. implementing accountability measures to sustain progress
This instructor-led training is designed to focus on mitigating the impact of bias in key situations and installing long-term behavior change.
By the end of this session, participants will:
• understanding how bias impacts interviews, performance evaluations and promotion decisions
• recognize the dynamics that lie beneath the bias; and
• be ready to take new actions to minimize its impact
PART III - ONE-ON-ONE COACHING SESSION

Allison Manswell, CPLP, Path Forward Consulting
Allison V. Manswell, CPLP is a seasoned HR and talent management professional with experience working with Fortune 100 companies like Exelon, PepsiCo, Lowe’s, State Farm, Johnson & Johnson. Her expertise includes organizational, leadership and executive development, diversity and inclusion. She has held leadership roles responsible for strategy, execution, profit & loss and employee development.
In addition to the industry credential as a Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CPLP), Allison holds an MBA in leadership. She also holds in BA in Justice and Law Enforcement from the University of Winnipeg where she started her career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Allison has also been an adjunct faculty member in classroom and online learning environments for Bachelor and Masters degree programs.
Allison is the author of Listen In: Crucial Conversations on Race in the Workplace and serves as a thought leader and advocate for issues in the African-American community. Her other publications include The Champions’ Ride: Success Skills from an SUV, a character-building curriculum for elementary, middle and high school students used in school systems nationally and internationally. Allison enjoys working with adults as a career coach and mentoring youth. Most importantly, she is the proud mother of three ‘millenial roommates’ who inspire her every day.
